Fun, but at what cost?

Today The Hubs took a half day at work so that we could take the kids to see Shrek 4 before the crowds exploded.  All 3 of them had been looking forward to it for weeks upon weeks.  We couldn’t drive anywhere without hearing Lolee shout “Hey, it’s Swek!” everytime we drive by a billboard.  The movie itself was cute….just like the other ones.  The kids laughed, Lolee tried really hard to stay in her seat, and as a group we ate through a large popcorn and 2 medium lemonades (although we probably could have eaten 2 popcorns if I would have let them get a refill.)  Honestly though, hours later, I’m still in sticker-shock!

4 tickets to the afternoon movie in 3D (2 children and 2 adults with a free baby under 3)…………….. $45.00

1 large popcorn, 2 medium drinks and a box of sweettarts……………… $24.00

$69.00 trip to the movies……………… not totally worth it.

It is my estimation that once King joins us and Lolee is old enough to be charged for a seat, we will spend upwards of $100 for a simple 2 hour trip to the movies.  Seriously?!  Does anyone remember the day when you could get a movie ticket and buy yourself enough treats to make you want to puke, for less than $10?  Now you can’t even get a spot to park yer butt for that amount.  No wonder families are going broke – they just want to have a little regular fun but the things that they’re used to are getting crazy, out of control expensive.  Ok, maybe that’s not the only reason, but it might be one of them.

You really need to find a Dollar Theater around your place! We just have to wait a bit longer but, a dollar a ticket? That’s sweet.
Did you know that you can get a really big purse and sneak in snacks?
(Yes I am a bit of a hillbilly- why do you ask?)
No really one time I snuck in chips, 4 candy boxes and three sodas- that’s talent.

I’m with you. I remember when my mom and I went to see Titanic for under ten dollars for the both of us. Early matinee after we had a big breakfast and we each bought a water. Last time I went to the movies it was almost twenty dollars for just me for the ticket, popcorn, and a soda–all small sizes. When I worked at the movie theater in Wilsonville, people would get so mad at me because ticket prices were $4.25 for matinee and $7.50 (I think) at night. Still spendy but a lot cheaper than today.

We wait and hit the Colombian theater on the water, they only charge $3.00 (or 4) but it is much cheaper! They only play one movie a week (at 7pm), so we wait for the good ones. You know how old that place is, so the sound sucks – but worth it!

It’s ridiculous! We went to see Shrek the other night, and for me, hubs & 1 kiddo it was $31.00 for tickets, and another $17.50 for a popcorn and two drinks. We went to Candyopolis to get our candy first, but that was still $10 for all 3 of us. It’s outrageous. I remember when I was a kid, movie tickets were $5.
